WILLIAM HAGUE REPEATS PLEDGE ON HUMAN
RIGHTS AT PARTY CONFERENCE
Speaking at a fringe meeting at the
Conservative Party Conference, organised by the Conservative Party
Human Rights Commission, Mr Hague told an audience of over 200 that
human rights would be a priority for a future Conservative foreign
policy.
The fringe meeting, chaired by the Commisssion
Chairman Stephen Crabb MP, was also addressed by the former MEP and
European Parliament rapporteur for human rights, Simon Coveney TD,
now a member of the Irish legislature, and the leader of the
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Nasheed. The Commission’s
Deputy Chairman, human rights activist Benedict Rogers, spoke of his
recent visit to the India-Burma border, and introduced Mohamed
Nasheed, who was released from house arrest following a campaign by
the Commission last year. Mohamed Nasheed paid tribute to the work
of the Commission, including a visit by Mr Rogers last year in which
he met Mr Nasheed under house arrest. |
