John Bercow MP, a member of the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission and Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Democracy in Burma, made an impassioned speech at a demonstration outside the Burmese Embassy on June 19th.

The protest, organised by the Burmese community in exile and Burma Campaign UK, marked Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi’s 61st birthday. Aung San Suu Kyi remains under house arrest.

Referring to the military regime that rules Burma as "thugs and imposters", John Bercow pledged to continue fighting for freedom for all the people of Burma, and called for the release of all political prisoners.

The Conservative Party Human Rights Commission’s Deputy Chairman, Ben Rogers, also spoke, and a representative of Gary Streeter MP took part in the protest.

Comedian Jo Brand and actress Prunella Scales also joined the demonstration, and delivered a letter to the Burmese Embassy with John Bercow and exiled Burmese Member of Parliament Bo Hla Tint, calling for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi
