Sam Burke, a member of the
Conservative Party Human Rights Commission, has contributed a new
policy proposal in an article on the website Conservativehome.com
Mr. Burke, a Parliamentary researcher, proposes the creation of a
new Ministerial position under the next Conservative Government, a
Minister in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office whose sole
responsibility will be to monitor human rights violations and
promote respect for human rights and democracy around the world.
In Opposition, the Conservatives should appoint a full-time
spokesman on international human rights on the front bench shadow
foreign affairs team, Mr. Burke adds.
The ministerial responsibility for human rights in the Foreign
Office is currently combined with Trade.
